Three-particle contribution to sedimentation and collective diffusion in hard-sphere suspensions

چکیده
The virial expansion of the collective mobility ~sedimentation! coefficient is considered for hard sphere suspensions at equilibrium. The term of the second order in volume fraction, which involves three-particle hydrodynamic interactions, is calculated with high accuracy. To achieve that we represent the collective mobility coefficient as the sum of convergent integrals over particle configurations. In this way the short-wave-number limit k→0 is avoided. Moreover, an efficient numerical procedure is applied to evaluate the hydrodynamic interactions. The algorithm is based on the multipole expansion, corrected for lubrication. The method allows us to analyze contributions to the collective mobility coefficient from different configurations of three particles and to select the dominant part. This suggests a general approximation scheme. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1484380#

Memory function for collective diffusion of interacting Brownian particles
– The problem of memory contribution to the collective diffusion coefficient of interacting Brownian particles is considered. A well-defined theoretical expression for this contribution, free of divergent integrals, is derived. Its value is then estimated for hard sphere suspensions numerically by means of extensive computer simulations. A good physical model for a broad class of suspensions is...
متن کاملAnisotropic diffusion of concentrated hard-sphere colloids near a hard wall studied by evanescent wave dynamic light scattering.
Evanescent wave dynamic light scattering and Stokesian dynamics simulations were employed to study the dynamics of hard-sphere colloidal particles near a hard wall in concentrated suspensions. The evanescent wave averaged short-time diffusion coefficients were determined from experimental correlation functions over a range of scattering wave vectors and penetration depths. Stokesian dynamics si...
متن کاملHydrodynamic and brownian fluctuations in sedimenting suspensions.
We use a mesoscopic computer simulation method to study the interplay between hydrodynamic and Brownian fluctuations during steady-state sedimentation of hard sphere particles for Peclet numbers (Pe) ranging from 0.1-15. Even when the hydrodynamic interactions are an order of magnitude weaker than Brownian forces, they still induce backflow effects that dominate the reduction of the average sed...
متن کاملShort–time rotational diffusion in monodisperse charge–stabilized colloidal suspensions
We investigate the combined effects of electrostatic interactions and hydrodynamic interactions (HI) on the short–time rotational self– diffusion coefficient Dr s in charge–stabilized suspensions. We calculate Dr s as a function of volume fraction φ for various effective particle charges and various amounts of added electrolyte. The influence of HI is taken into account by a series expansion of...
متن کاملAbsence of scaling for the intermediate scattering function of a hard-sphere suspension: static and dynamic x-ray scattering from concentrated polystyrene latex spheres.
X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and small-angle scattering measurements are presented of the dynamics and structure of concentrated suspensions of charge-stabilized polystyrene latex spheres dispersed in glycerol, for volume fractions from 3% to 52%. The static structures of the suspensions show essentially hard-sphere behavior, and the short-time dynamics shows good agreement with predic...
